Bellingham Confluence
Marine Area 8-1 is open for beach coho through October 12th and Area 6 closes October 15th. It has been an exceptional saltwater salmon season from both beach and boat. South Sound and Hood Canal remain productive for cutthroat through fall and winter.

Fishing the surface was productive with 2 landed and many missed; some larger sea run cutthroat over 18 inches were active and jumping near the boat. Plenty of bait still present.

Migratory coho are present and aggressively feeding alongside sea-run cutthroat; topwater flies are producing explosive takes. Use 0x or 1x tippet with a 7-8 foot leader.

Puget Sound is fishing well but kelp is a significant obstacle; outgoing tides are strongly preferred for the next few months. Low light mornings and slight breeze midday improve conditions.

South Puget Sound is producing good Sea Run Cutthroat fishing with lots of bait around, particularly sand lance and small herring. Fast retrieves are key with grabs occurring right at the rod tip.

Coho returns in Marine Areas 8 and 9 have been impressive, with salmon running larger than average. Beach fishing with Clousers and stinger-style flies is producing well, including both wild and hatchery fish.

Resident coho in the 3–5 lb class have been present in northern Marine Areas 9 and 10, with fish also moving through the San Juans. Beach fishing at west side Whidbey locations is expected to improve steadily as more ocean coho push in through the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Coastal cutthroat are present on the east side of Whidbey Island and around Camano Island; seaweed and eel grass can be an issue so outgoing tides are preferred. The coho forecast for Puget Sound looks solid, with beach salmon season anticipated later this summer off the west side of Whidbey.

May and June are among the best months for sea-run cutthroat and bull trout along the North Sound beaches, with fry patterns and baitfish imitations producing well. Lingcod season is also open through June 15th with aggressive fish available to those who can get flies down to 20-50 feet.
